THE PLUS OF “THE SCIENCE OF WHERE”

Technological innovation acquires added value in the “where” of man, where humanity lives, works, rejoices, suffers. In short, the

“plus” offered by technology becomes such in the complexities of the human in every reality and on a planetary level.

There is nothing more “glocal” than technology. Man has always been looking for tools that allow him to overcome the limits of his intelligence. And he does it to improve his living conditions, to be more human, to strive for the fullness of his existence in a context that, especially in recent decades, has become planetary.

Any reflection on technology, therefore, is profoundly political because it is profoundly human. It is clear today, following the analysis of think tanks, that technology is also, increasingly, a geostrategic factor of extraordinary importance.

If we follow the applications of “the science of where”, from the government of each territory to space and back, we discover infinite possibilities to understand and organize the “oil” of the third millennium, our data, those that we ourselves generate through our mobility.

These data are valuable not only for preventing any problems (think of citizen services, the configuration of cities, fires, defense and security issues, and so on) but also for tracing ways of a policy that considers technology as an essential element in building human coexistence and to safeguarde the natural environment.

Through the technologies of “the science of where” the way of doing public administration and of imagining the relationship between citizens and institutions change radically. Cities, the “first” places of the “where”, gradually emerge as the areas of a “glocal” diplomacy: Carlo Ratti recalls in our pages that from space we can see cities and not States.

In conclusion, “the science of where” places the need for new visions for new solutions to the ruling classes (not just political ones). A more just, equitable and sustainable world will be possible if we all know how to re-think strategies that open our intelligences in the worlds we live in: for this reason, technological innovation is fundamental.
